Chapter Twenty-three

The rest of the morning was a blur. Lizzy and Darcy had moved from having sex in the kitchen to having sex on most surfaces of the large, expensively furnished loft. The couch, the bed, hell, even one of the windows had all been marked by their insatiable desire for one another.

Around four, Darcy said she had to get some actual work done. Lizzy asked if it was for their trial together, hoping to find some excuse to stay even longer, but Darcy said no and promised they would really start working on the trial on Monday.

“Try not to get in much trouble without me until then,” Darcy said with a wink as she kissed Lizzy good-bye.

Lizzy was trying really hard not to fall for this woman. That was why she’d decided to leave in the middle of the night. The idea of waking up next to Darcy just felt too…too right. Too perfect. When she was with Darcy, it was like something out of a cheesy Hallmark movie. She got these little stars in her eyes, and all she could think about was touching Darcy, kissing her, pleasing her.

No, it was best that she not expose herself to that. That was why, when she did return that morning, she told herself it was just for more incredible sex. Her feelings were just hormones in action. This was fine.

But the second she left the beautiful loft, a slow, dull ache began to grow inside her chest. Jesus, Taylor, pull yourself together. It was just sex.

Really, really, really good sex. Okay, fine, it was the best sex of her life. Whatever.

She skipped the song on her playlist, some sappy love song she used to like, and flipped to a more upbeat rap song she knew every single word to. As the 1 train screeched to a halt at 145th Street, she exited and wrapped the borrowed coat around her body.

It was one of Darcy’s. Not the black fancy one. This one was a green, military-style jacket that Lizzy would have actually worn herself. It fit her better than the black one too. It still smelled like Darcy, and she ignored the swell in her chest that hit her with each heartbeat as the cold wind made the smell smack her in the face.

“Here,” Darcy had said, pulling the coat out of the closet. “It’s not the warmest, but it goes with your cute little outfit.”

Lizzy had looked at her jeans and brown combat boots before Darcy had helped her slip the jacket on before kissing her long and hard one last time.

“Keep this safe for me,” she had said, patting Lizzy’s chest. It wasn’t clear if she was referring to Lizzy’s heart or the borrowed jacket, but Lizzy didn’t ask for clarification.

Darcy had offered to call an Uber, but Lizzy had declined. She liked riding trains most days. It gave her a chance to clear her mind and avoid the traffic and mayhem overhead. Plus, she’d spent a shit ton
